(DI-2005) Example: Number of Active Users on the System

This example shows how you can create your own KPI from an existing KPI to monitor all active users on the system. The existing KPI 'USER_CNT_SER' collects information about the number of active users per each server. You can use the calculation function to calculate the sum of all servers of the source KPIs.

Create a custom KPI

  1. Go to the Settings > Monitoring settings (or transaction /DVD/MON_CUST).
  2. Click New entries (F5).
  3. Fill in all required fields for the custom KPI as displayed in the figure below:
    1. KPI name: "ZCUSTOM_USR_CNT_SYS".
    2. KPI collector: "/DVD/MON_CL_COLLECTOR" (standard collector which is used for creating a KPI from an existing KPI).
    3. Set Collected on to "Central system". The calculation functions may be performed only on the central system, as on the central system are available all the collected values for other KPIs.
    4. Use the calculation function "Sum from all servers".
    5. Fill in Calculate value from 1st KPI: "USER_CNT_SER".
    6. The other mandatory fields were filled as on the figure below. For a complete description see the chapter (DI-2005) How to Create a KPI from an Existing KPI.

  4. Save the created KPI (CTRL + S).

Create a Monitoring profile for the custom KPI

  1. Go to the Settings > Monitoring settings (or transaction /DVD/MON_CUST).
  2. Double-click Profile definition.
  3. Click New Entries (F5).
  4. Fill the profile name ZCUSTOM.
  5. Double-click Assigned KPIs.
  6. Click New Entries (F5).
  7. Fill in the custom KPI name ZCUSTOM_USR_CNT_SYS.
  8. Save (CTRL+S).

The custom KPI "ZCUSTOM_USR_CNT_SYS" is now assigned to a valid Monitoring profile ZCUSTOM.

Schedule the monitoring of a custom KPI

Custom KPI "ZCUSTOM_USR_CNT_SYS" is now assigned to a valid Monitoring profile "ZCUSTOM". The last step is to execute the monitoring of this KPI for a specific system with the created Monitoring profile:

  1. In the main screen, go the the Collector Jobs tab.
  2. Select Create collector job.
  3. Fill in the System ID on which you want to monitor the KPI.
  4. Fill the Monitoring profile with a value ZCUSTOM.
  5. Adjust the Period and Retention time according to your requirements.
  6. Click (Re)Start collector job.

For information on how to schedule and start a Collector job, see the chapter (DI-2005) Schedule the Monitoring of KPIs.

When the monitoring was started and finished successfully, you may display the results of your custom KPI in the main screen. For further information on how to display a KPI, see the chapter (DI-2005) Display KPIs.
