(1905) Group Archiving with Process Chains

It is possible to archive a group of DataProviders at a time by defining group archiving process chains.

This process consists of these two main steps:

  1. Defining a process type for group archiving
  2. Defining group archiving process chains

Defining a process type for group archiving

  1. Open Process Chains view in SAP through the transaction RSPC, and go to Settings > Maintain Process Types.
  2. On this screen go to Edit mode, then click New entries.
  3. Select a name for your process type (in this example ZDVD_NLS_O) and also fill in the necessary fields as shown below:
  4. Save the process type. This process type is going to be used later, after the process chain is defined.

Defining group archiving process chains

  1. First, DataProviders must be assigned to a Group ID. Open DataTiering through the transaction /DVD/OFF.
  2. Open the program /DVD/OFF_GROUP_ARCH_EXE. Don't execute it, just create a variant where you insert:
  • the Group ID from the previous step
  • the maximum number of parallel archiving jobs (Note: If the number of DataProviders in a group is bigger than the max number of jobs, the remaining jobs won't start immediately, but only after the first set of jobs is finished.)
  • the time delay between status checks in seconds (60 seconds by default)

3. Open Process Chain view through the transaction RSPC and define a new process chain (e.g. under Unassigned Nodes create the subnode Offloading Group Archiving) by using the process type, which is called Offloading Group Archiving (can be found under Data Target Administration node)

4. Double click the process type (or right click on the process type and click Maintain variant...)

5. In the process type settings set your Program Variant and Program Name/DVD/OFF_GROUP_ARCH_EXE

6. Activate the created process chain.

7. Now the process chain can be executed.

8. Group archiving logs can be found in the Process chain view through RSPC by double clicking on the process chain and selecting the Log icon.
